Spring Hope Food Drive

Date and Time: Apr 1, 2022 12:00am to Apr 30, 2022 12:00am

Location: Ontario

The Annual Spring Hope Food Drive is back for 2022 and unfortunately the need has never been higher. As more and more Canadians face food insecurity and financially challenging times, it is important that our industry finds meaningful ways to support those in our communities. This year’s food drive will once again be run in conjunction with our regional association partners; including Greater Toronto Apartment Association, London Property Management Association, Eastern Ontario Landlord Organization and Hamilton and District Apartment Association.

In light of the global pandemic, there are some changes this year. Each association will be running their initiative in the manner that works best in their region and with the advice of their local food bank. Many food banks are reporting that they have limited resources for pickups and would prefer monetary donations as it allow them to purchase specific items with more buying power. Please contact your regional coordinators for full details.

Greater Toronto Apartment Association
Areas: Toronto, Mississauga, Peel and Durham
Details: GTAA will be conducted a fundraising initiative this year to support North York Harvest, Mississauga Food Bank and Daily Bread throughout the month of April
info@gtaaonline.com

London Property Management Association
Area: London
Details: LPMA will utilize volunteers to collect food donations in participating buildings on the evening of April 27th. This will benefit the London Food Bank. Members may also make a monetary donation by contacting the LPMA office.

Eastern Ontario Landlord Organization
Details: TBC
Area: Ottawa
admin@eolo.ca

Hamilton & District Apartment Association
Details: TBC
Area: Hamilton, Burlington & Oakville
info@hamiltonapartmentassociation.ca

Please note that FRPO will not be coordinating any pickups or donations this year given the large catchment areas. We encourage our members to participate in this initiative and to utilize a format that works for your communities. If you wish to collect food donations, please contact your local food bank to arrange pickup or drop off. You may wish to provide the food bank donation link to your residents that wish to donate directly. Members may also consider a corporate donation to your local food bank or Feed Ontario to assist during these difficult times.

If you wish to coordinate this initiative in an area outside of the above locations, you may reach out to Lynzi Michal at lmichal@frpo.org who can provide you with the electronic poster template. Thank you for your support of this event. Together we can make a difference.

2022 Residential Tenancies Act Educational Sessions

Date and Time: Apr 7, 2022 9:30am to May 6, 2022 11:45am
Location: Webinar and In-Person

Managing the Legal and Practical Challenges That Are Now A Legacy of the COVID Era

This year’s sessions will be held virtually and in-person with a focus on the continuing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on building operations, tenant services and related changes under the RTA and at the Landlord Tenant Board. Since last year’s program, landlords have been given new rights, remedies and liabilities through the September 2021 changes to the RTA.

On the other hand, with significant rent arrears and continued delays and inefficiencies at the Landlord and Tenant Board, Landlords must adapt to an increase in tenant bankruptcy proposals; extended rent arrears repayment plans; inter-tenant conflicts; and, costly strategies to secure remedies at the Board.

Our presenters will explain the legal changes that have now eliminated the need for most Small Claims Court proceedings; the legal rights and remedies for landlords when tenants file for bankruptcy or make consumer proposals; the new right to recover judgments against “former tenants”; and the new liabilities and challenges relative to renovations, capital expenditures, and AGI’s . We’ll also review new and updated LTB rules, terminating tenancies and how to secure a consent order. These educational sessions are essential learning opportunities for all rental housing professionals including on-site staff, property managers, administrative and leasing teams.

Learn from Real Life Cases

Numerous important cases involving rental housing providers work their way through the courts each year. Our sessions will look at recent case examples from the LTB and Divisional Court that have significantly affected residential tenancy law this past year.
